Dr. Benjamin McCommon

M.D., Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University

Dr. Benjamin McCommon is an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University in New York and a member of TFP-New York. He graduated from Harvard College and received his M.D. from Columbia University. He completed his psychiatric training and a fellowship in public psychiatry at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He completed his psychoanalytic training at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. He is a certified supervisor and therapist in Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) and an official trainer and therapist in Good Psychiatric Management for Borderline Personality Disorder (GPM).

Dr. McCommon has a long interest in the use of evidence-based treatments including medication and psychotherapy in outpatient psychiatric care. He was a psychiatrist at the Columbia University Intensive Outpatient Program and was director of the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Mental Health Center at Columbia University. He was a therapist in a study of Panic Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy at Cornell University. He has supervised and taught psychiatric residents at Columbia University, including courses in TFP and GPM. He is currently one of the instructors in the Columbia University TFP Training Program. Dr. McCommon has a private practice in Manhattan in adult psychiatry, including medication management and psychotherapy.
